introduction
ROTA – Roma Organisation for Training and Advocacy is a genuine Roma led organisation, established in March 2022. ROTA emerged from a handful of people frustrations. We transformed our frustrations in motivation and commitment for change to improve the Roma situation in UK. Over 75% of our activities are voluntary based. We are working very closely with the Embassy of Romania to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Romanian General Consulates in London, Manchester and Edinburgh, the European Union Delegation to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and many Roma organisations across UK.
The following CPD training course is addressing to the representatives of central and local authorities, public services and other social services who are engaging with Roma communities on regular basis and is meant to improve the services through a more cultural informed approach.
We tried to synthetise, at our best, and to give an overview and understanding on the Roma communities situation taking account of cultural specificity, history, demographics and socio-political situation.
During the training course we are going to refer to the Roma as GRT, too, because of the public policies refer to GRT, but our expertise is on engagement with Roma communities exclusively. We are approaching this subject later in the Gypsy/Gypsyism/Antigypsyism session and give a better understanding of the “misunderstanding”.
From our experience of almost 30 years of working with and for Roma communities, we thought that it might be apropriate to give some recommendations. Some of the recommendations reflect good practices of policies and measures which are already adopted and implemented in other European countries.
To be noted that we would like to give you more information for a better understanding, but the time allocated for this training course does not allow us to go more in depth, but we are going to answer to your questions in the Q&A session, and even later, whenever you need our advice, we are keen to support you!
